A brief history of First English Lutheran Church
First English Lutheran Church of Lennox, South Dakota celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2012, but the foundation of the local congregation was laid long before 1912. The original Lennox Lutheran congregation was established in 1882 and these early Lutheran families of the community planted the seeds that would later become FELC.
Organized in 1912 under the direction of Rev. H. M. Solem, FELC has remained steadfast in presenting the message of God’s love and His plan of salvation. As a Lutheran body, its pastors and members have faithfully proclaimed the Word. To fulfill their mission, the congregation has at various times embarked on extensive building programs. The stone church was built in 1941, replacing an earlier wood structure. In 1961 the Fellowship Hall and an education unit were added, as well as the nave being enlarged. Later a new kitchen was added, and most recently a parking lot was paved.
In 2012, members of FELC made a major decision for the church's future when votes were cast to determine that the congregation would be affiliated with the North American Lutheran Church, rather than with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This decision was made for the sake of the Gospel and its authoritative proclamation.
The mission of FELC remains unchanged: we exist to grow through prayer and the Word into the reality of Christ in our daily lives. We welcome all to join us in this mission.
A more complete history of the congregation can be found in the 100th Anniversary History Book which can be acquired at the church office.
